Rooftop Message in Puerto Rico Reaches Anxious Family in Chicago

A rooftop message in Puerto Rico calmed the nerves of a Chicago family who had been anxiously awaiting word from loved ones on the hurricane-ravaged island.

Spelled out on the rooftop was "PL CALL [Chicago number] ALL FAM OK THNX."

So much of Puerto Rico is decimated and communication to the outside world has been limited.

A U.S. Army lieutenant, who wished to remain anonymous, took a photo from a helicopter and called the Chicago number and passed along the message.

The number belonged to Lisette Montalvo's sister who lives here.

She quickly shared the good news with her family on social media.

Luz Morris is a cousin of the woman who wrote the message.

"When we first saw the picture posted on FB on our family page, I did mention to my cousin Charo who is the one started the page, I said don't be surprised if that doesn't go viral," he told NBC 5 Friday. "I said because I have not seen anyone else do that so far on the island to use their roof of their property to send out a message."

Montalvo and her husband shared with their family that they believe they have enough food and water to get them by, but the family still worries.

They're worried for them as well as all of their other relatives who live on the island.

Puerto Rico Rises Chicago will be taking donations here at 3500 N Kimball tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
