Illinois Congressman Requests Federal Investigation Of Quarry Blast

Rep. Dan Lipinski wants to know if quarry policy violations triggered tremor

Rep. Dan Lipinski is requesting a federal investigation into the quarry blast that disturbed western suburb residents Monday afternoon.

In a letter to the U.S. Department of Labor and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Lipinski asked the agencies to determine if workers violated any laws or regulations regarding explosives.

"Unfortunately, homeowners and businesses in the western suburbs are accustomed to being disturbed and startled by frequent quarry blasting, but the incident that took place earlier this week demands additional scrutiny," he said. "Residents of the area deserve some answers."

His request comes after the Illinois Department of Natural Resources released a report of its findings from the incident.

"Our review of quarry records does show measurement equipment picked up vibrations from a second and separate event approximately seven seconds after the initial blast," the agency said. "What this secondary event was, or what caused it, is outside our regulatory expertise."

Lipinski is also asking agencies to ensure measures are in place to protect communities from similar events in the future.

"The potential for unseen damage to homes and businesses caused by a blast such as this is unacceptable," he said.

Lipinski is a Western Springs resident and said he felt the tremor while sitting at his kitchen table.

Monday's blast was recorded as a 3.2 seismic event by the United States Geological Survey.
