Chicago Man Bludgeoned Mother to Death, Hit Brother With Hammer: Police

A Chicago man is accused of stabbing and bludgeoning his mother to death and hitting his brother with a hammer before trying to run him over during a fight, police said.

Wojceich Sadelski, 26, was charged with one felony count of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with use of a deadly weapon and two counts of attempted first-degree murder.

Police allege Sadelski was involved in a domestic-related altercation just after 8 p.m. Wednesday at his home in the 4800 block of South Karlov Avenue when he fatally stabbed and bludgeoned his 54-year-old mother.

Sadelski then hit his 30-year-old brother with a hammer and tried to hit him with a vehicle before crashing into a nearby garage.

The mother, who was identified as Maria Sadelski, was found by police in the basement of her home and pronounced dead at the scene with blunt force injuries to the head, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The brother was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition with lacerations to his head.

Juventino Vargas said the family had lived in the home in Chicago's Archer Heights neighborhood for 25 years.

"To see that mom has passed away, it's very hard," he said. "It's pretty heartbreaking."

Neighbors called police after they heard screaming coming from the home and saw a man run out of the residence.

"We heard a really loud noise, we came outside and we saw he was screaming, 'Help,' and he was on the floor," said resident Esmeralda Flores.

Neighbors say the brothers both lived in the home with their parents.

"They are a great family," Vargas said. "Shocking all this happened."

It was not immediately clear what the fight was about.

Sadelski is expected to appear in bond court Friday.
