Supermoon Set to Light Up Night Sky

Rare occurrence happens every 18 years

Does the moon appear to be bigger and brighter than you're used to?  That's because it is!

On Saturday we will experience a "Supermoon."

The moon is going to be closer to the Earth than it has been in 18 years.

It will appear noticeably bigger and brighter than a typical full moon, 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter to be exact.

The supermoon will be at its fullest around 1:00 pm Saturday afternoon, but to get the full effect you should catch a glimpse of it again at night.

According to NASA's website, it is called a supermoon because it "is a very noticeable alignment that at first glance would seem to have an effect."

But the effects from a supermoon on Earth are minor, the website says.

This unique alignment of the Earth and the moon is even bigger and brighter than "wolf moon" which occurs in January.

If you do not get a chance to see the supermoon today, you may have to wait until 2029 to see it.
