Are donuts the new cupcake in popular foodie dessert trends?
To fans of National Donut Day (that's today, by the way), it's always been about the donuts. Yes, way before a tasty new Windy City "vault" came along.
National Doughnut Day started in 1938 in Chicago when The Salvation Army picked this day to salute women serving doughnuts to U.S. soldiers during World War I.
Since then, the holiday stuck, and every year some donut chains, mom-and-pop bakeries and even trendy dessert boutiques choose to host deals in celebration of the day.
Owners of The Donut Vault haven't said whether they'll have a deal, but area Dunkin' Donuts franchises are advertising donut giveaways, and a pastry quiz on Twitter (#DDonuts) for free stuff. Krispy Kreme is offering a similar free-pastry deal.
