Police in Kane County are still searching for the suspect in a hit-and-run crash that left a 7-year-old girl in an area hospital, but they’re confident that they’ll be able to find the driver responsible for the incident.
On Sunday afternoon, the girl was riding her bike near Geneva and Courier Avenues in unincorporated St. Charles when she was struck by a man driving a black Dodge pick-up truck.
The little girl was airlifted to an area hospital, where Kane County Sheriff Ron Kain says her condition is improving after she initially was reported to have potentially life-threatening injuries.
“Her condition is rapidly improving, so we’re hoping for the best for her,” he said.
As for the driver, he fled the scene on foot, with some witnesses saying he jumped into the Fox River to try to avoid authorities.
Other residents said that the driver actually jogged through their yards just before authorities showed up in search of him.
“We’ve gotten at least two phone calls from people saying that a gentleman ran through their yard,” Kain said.

Law enforcement officials from several different agencies searched the area with drones, boats, and K-9 units, but have been unable to track down the driver, who abandoned his vehicle about a quarter-mile from where the collision took place.
Police now say that they know the name of the driver, and that they are confident that they will find him in the near future.
Anyone with information on the suspect’s whereabouts is encouraged to call 911. He is described as a white male, standing 5-foot-6 and weighing around 120 pounds, and he has long hair and was wearing tan pants at the time of the crash.
