Rumors of McCaskey Family Selling Bears Seem Unlikely

Rumors of McCaskeys considering selling Bears seem unlikely originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

You may have read rumors that the McCaskey family is talking about selling the Bears soon. A report came out Wednesday night of infighting among some of the family to move on from the team, soon, however that seems highly unlikely.

Virginia McCaskey, daughter of Papa Bear George Halas, is still the First Lady of Football, and has expressed time and time again, she has no plans to hand the Bears over to someone else.

“After dad died, at age 60 I started a whole new life,” said McCaskey, in a wide-spanning interview with the Athletic in 2016. “It was pretty scary. A lot of people were saying we should sell. It never occurred to me to do that. I can’t think of anything else I’d rather be doing.”

She’s so passionate about the game, she told the Athletic she would bring her children and grandchildren to understand the significance of being an NFL owner.

“I want our family to attend so they get some idea that it isn’t just our interest in the Chicago Bears,” she said via the Athletic. “We are part of a much larger picture and we have a great deal of responsibility. The best things people have said to me were dad and Mugs (her late brother George Jr.) did what was best for the good of the league rather than what was best for the Chicago Bears.”

It’s not just Virginia either. In the same Athletic piece she quotes her son Pat as saying the family wants to own the Bears “until the second coming.” George McCaskey has echoed the same sentiment. The Bears are the Halas/McCaskey family, and the Halas/McCaskey family is the Bears.

As long as Virginia is alive, putting the team up for sale seems like a non-starter.
