Bote slow to leave the field after slide, but likely ‘OK’ originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
Cubs second baseman David Bote was slow to leave the field after a slide into second base in the Cubs’ 5-2 loss to the Braves on Friday.
Cubs bench coach Andy Green, who filled in for manager David Ross as he served a one-game suspension Friday, said after the game that he thinks Bote’s “going to be OK.” Green hadn’t yet checked with the athletic trainers.
“He relayed to me, he just felt like he cramped up a little bit while he was reaching for the base,” Green said of Bote. “Scared him for a second, but by the time he was walking all the way off, he was begging to stay in the baseball game because he wanted to keep playing.”
Bote pinch hit for relief pitcher Pedro Stop in the sixth inning. With two outs, Bote drew a walk. But then he was caught attempting to steal second base when Braves pitcher Sean Newcomb threw a changeup on an 0-2 count.
Bote walked off the field of his own volition, but he reached for his leg several times. Cubs reliever Dillon Maples took the mound in the seventh inning, and Bote left the game.
