After notching his first career four-hit game, Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras made a bold declaration about his team.
The Cubs moved back above the .500 mark as they knocked off the Baltimore Orioles 8-0 on Sunday afternoon, and in the process they finished off a sweep and continued the momentum that they’ve been generating since the All-Star break.
Seeing that kind of offensive output has helped bolster the team’s confidence, and Contreras was brimming after the game.
“I think we are back,” the catcher said. “Back to where we were last year.”
In total, Contreras went 8-for-14 in the series, including a four-hit afternoon on Sunday. After a sluggish month of June, the catcher seems to be finding his form, as he is batting .378 with three home runs and seven RBI in the month of July. He has an excellent 1.128 OPS during the month as well, as he’s been one of the key pieces to the team’s recent offensive resurgence.
