The Chicago Cubs made a roster move prior to Friday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds, placing left-handed pitcher Kyle Ryan on the bereavement list.

Ryan has a 3-1 record and a 2.80 ERA in 52 appearances with the Cubs this season, striking out 44 batters in 45 innings of work. He has been used in a variety of roles for the team, and has been used in more high-leverage situations in recent games.

The Cubs announced they would replace Ryan on the active roster with pitcher Alec Mills, whom they called up from Triple-A Iowa. Mills has appeared in two games with the big league Cubs this season, with a 4.35 ERA in 10.1 innings of work. He has struck out 11 batters while walking two.

According to MLB rules, Ryan must remain away from the team for at least three games, and could be out for a maximum of seven games.

The Cubs and Reds will get underway in Cincinnati at 6:10 p.m., and Yu Darvish will get the ball for the North Siders as they try to win their seventh game in their last eight outings.
