2 Teens Lose Arms in Separate Shark Attacks in N.C.

The two teens who lost arms in separate shark attacks in North Carolina were attacked in shallow water that was about waist-deep, officials said Monday morning at a news conference. A 16-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl both lost their left arms and suffered other serious injuries in separate attacks in Oak Island, authorities said Sunday night. The girl's left arm was amputated below the elbow, and she suffered lower leg tissue damage, while the boy's left arm was amputated below the shoulder. The girl was bitten by a shark while visiting family, and the second attack was only about 2 miles away, Oak Island Fire Chief Chris Anselmo said. "I've been here 16 years," he said. "This is the first time something this major has happened."
