A Valpraiso, Ind., woman died from her injuries after driving her car into Hobart's Lake George Wednesday afternoon.
It happened at about 2:30 p.m. at 66 Main Street in Hobart.
Witnesses say the woman, identified as 83-year-old Shirley J. Gronlund, drove her car down a walkway along the lakefront and crashed through a metal railing into the lake.
Officers arrived shortly afterward and called for a police diver who broke the passenger window and removed the unconscious driver from the vehicle.
Gronlund was treated at the scene and transferred to a local hospital where she later died.
The police diver injured his hand during the attempted rescue, but was treated and released from the hospital.
