Non-Swimmer Goes Under at Dells Waterpark

Chicago woman in critical condition at UW Hospital

A Chicago woman is in critical condition after nearly drowning Sunday at the Kalahari Waterpark at the Wisconsin Dells.

Lake Delton, Wisc., authorities say Lakieta Halton, 27, followed her boyfriend into a pool of water that was over both their heads. Neither could swim.

While the boyfriend, Ricky English, 30, Chicago, was being pulled from the water, rescuers were not aware that the woman had gone under.

Witnesses at the scene told police Halton was under water anywhere from less than one minute to 1 1/2 minutes before a lifeguard pulled her out, the Baraboo News Republic reported.  CPR was performed at the scene.

Emergency crews transported Halton to St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo, and later moved her to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison.

Response from the Kalahari Waterpark Resort Convention Center was guarded, as they issued a statement saying:

"We are proud of our onsite lifeguards and emergency personnel who reacted quickly to this situation to deliver lifesaving protocol. We are working closely with authorities to further investigate this event and we are conducting an internal investigation."
