Three-Year-Old Abandoned at Firehouse

Woman says she was boy's aunt and had to report for military duty

A woman who said she was the aunt of a 3-year-old boy dropped him off at a South Side firehouse Monday night, saying she was going overseas and couldn’t take care of him anymore, police said.

The boy, whose identity was not being released by police Tuesday morning, was left at the firehouse near 67th and South Blackstone Avenue, police said.

The woman told firefighters that the boy's mother had left the boy at her residence a few days ago, but she couldn't care for him anymore because she had to report for military duty.

The boy was checked out at a local hospital and was "fine" but police had contacted the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services who would probably be taking custody of the child.

Illinois' Safe Haven law only allows children up to 30 days old to be left with personnel at designated safe havens like hospitals.
