2 90-Year-Olds Killed in Fire on Chicago's West Side

A man and a woman, both 90 years old, died in a fire on Chicago’s West Side early Tuesday, authorities said.

Firefighters were called to an apartment building in the 4000 block of West Wilcox Street in the city’s West Garfield Park neighborhood around 3:15 a.m., according to the Chicago Fire Department.

There they discovered the two victims, who were both pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office could not immediately confirm the fatalities and further details, including their identities, were not available.

Neighbors said they were saddened to learn of the death of the elderly couple, adding that everyone on the block knew them and they had lived in the community for a long time.

The fire was extinguished and no other victims were found, fire officials said. No other injuries were reported, according to Chicago police. Authorities said the building had smoke detectors, but they were not working at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, authorities said.
