‘They Passed in My Arms': Vigil Held After Back of the Yards Shooting

A prayer vigil was held in the neighborhood where a shooting left a pregnant woman and her mother dead, and an infant and two men wounded.

The event was held in the city’s Back of the Yards neighborhood at 53rd and South Aberdeen. Patricia Chew, 23, and Lolita Wells, 46, were identified as the women killed in the shooting.

“They passed in my arms last night,” said James Chew, Patricia Chew’s brother. “They struggled enough.”

James Chew said Patricia's four-year-old son is asking tough questions.

“I can't explain to my nephew where his momma is,” James Chew said. “He asked me and I have no answer.”

Two 25-year-old men, one with gunshot wounds on both legs and another with wounds unknown, were also taken to Mt. Sinai hospital after the shooting, police said.

No suspects are in custody in the shooting, police said.

The shooting comes after a violent weekend in Chicago that left four people dead and at least 52 others injured, The weekend before that saw eight people killed and at least 45 others were wounded, reportedly making it the city's most violent two-day weekend since Father's Day 2013.
