Trapped Downers Grove Worker Rescued

One worker freed himself and called for help

A maintenance worker survived an on-the-job scare at a Downers Grove hospital Wednesday night.

Two 800-pound air conditioning coils landed on top of two workers in a mechanical room at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in the 3800 block of Highland Avenue around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, said Marsha Giesler, fire department spokeswoman.

The coils pinned the men up against a wall, but one managed to wiggle out and call for help.

Downers Grove firefighters arrived on the scene. It took them more than an hour to free the other worker. At the same time, hospital staff treated the trapped worker.

He received treatment in the emergency room immediately after he was freed. The staff moved him out of the ER overnight, Giesler said.
