Most of us tend to overdo a large meal during the Holiday season, followed by relaxing, and this is when heartburn sets in.

Heartburn is caused when stomach acid refluxes or backs up into the esophagus. A burning sensation begins behind the breastbone causing the chest to feel as though it’s on fire. It can travel all the way to the mouth, resulting in a sour taste and the sensation of food re-entering your mouth.

There are several specific foods featured on Holiday menus which can put people at risk for heartburn. So to diminish the likelihood of the big “H” by avoiding the following:

Chocolate: It's high in caffeine, fat and cocoa all of which cause heartburn.

Soda & Carbonated Beverages: The bubbles expand inside the stomach and the increased pressure leads to reflux.

Fried Food: The single most recognized cause of reflux and it doesn't matter what type of food it is.

Alcohol: Although, many alcoholic beverages are not acidic, it is believed they relax the valve at the bottom of the stomach leading to reflux.

High Fat Dairy Products: All high fat foods cause reflux and one type of high fat cheese or butter is not better than another. Watch the volume, difficult to do with those cheese platters everywhere.

High Meats: All high fat meats--beef, pork, and lamb--stay in the stomach longer, increasing the likelihood of reflux.

Caffeine: The less, the better off you are.

Additionally, it helps to eat smaller meals, eat slower, and wear looser clothes.
