Teen Killed Trying to Run Across Edens Expressway After Running Out of Gas

A 19-year-old died Wednesday after being hit by a van while trying to run across the Edens Expressway.

Around 12:45 a.m. officers responded to a call reporting a man had been struck by a vehicle in the expressway's northbound lanes near Skokie Boulevard in north suburban Wilmette, according to Illinois State Police Sgt. Alexander Diaz.

Two passengers who were riding with the teen, a 15-year-old girl and 20-year-old man, told police he got out of the car after it ran out of gas in an attempt to run across the roadway before he was hit in the snowy conditions.

The teenager, whose identity has not been released, was taken to Evanston Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. No one else was injured in the crash and no charges are expected to be filed against the driver involved in the accident.

Drivers are urged to stay in their vehicles in case of emergency while on the road and to dial *999 if in need of help. For more information on Illinois Tollway services, visit their website.
