Suspect Charged in Murder, Robbery of Elderly Man

Samuel Higgins was ordered held on $1 million bail Saturday

A 29-year-old man has been charged in the murder of an 88-year-old man on Chicago’s South Side last month.

Samuel Higgins, of the 900 block of East 84th Street, was charged with one felony count of murder and one felony count of robbery of a victim older than 60, police said Saturday.

Arthur Hearn, 88, was attacked and robbed just before 5 a.m. on Sept. 25 near a bus stop in the 8500 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, according to authorities.

Police said Hearn was knocked to the ground by a man who then went through his pockets while a woman stood watch.

Hearn was transported to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in critical condition with head trauma but was pronounced dead Sunday.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said Hearn died of head injuries due to an assault and his death was ruled a homicide.

Higgins, who arrived in court wearing a fur coat, was ordered held on $1 million bail Saturday.
