Schools in suburban Chicago are to receive a shipment of 7,000 new iPads in August as part of an effort to increase student performance.
The Daily Herald reports that Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 on Thursday approved a three-year lease agreement with Apple for the iPads. The deal expands on a current district program that gave 1,500 students an iPad 2 last fall.
The lease will cost the district about $1.13 million each year for the next three years. The 2013-14 leasing cost will be covered through the district's projected $2.75 million technology budget.
District officials say leasing iPads allows more students to have access to devices immediately and provides a predictable expenditure amount.
