Storms Hit Parts of Chicago Area Amid Heat Wave

As temperatures swell for the fourth day in a row, the Chicago area’s heat wave was met with storms in some parts beginning Tuesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for northwestern Will County through 4:30 p.m., warning of a storm over Plainfield at 3:48 p.m., moving east at 5 mph.

60 mph winds and quarter-size hail were possible in locations including Aurora, Naperville, Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Plainfield and Crest Hill, the NWS said.

An earlier Severe Thunderstorm Warning for McHenry and Boone counties that was expected to last through 4 p.m. was canceled about 20 minutes early, while a similar alert for DeKalb and Ogle counties lasted through 3 p.m., while the rest of the Chicago area will likely stay dry. Porter County, Indiana was also under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning.

Wednesday could be a different story. It looks to be hot and humid once more with temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s again, though isolated storms and showers will increase in the afternoon and through the evening hours.

Those storms will likely bring heavy rain, strong winds and potentially even hail as they cross the Chicago area, with a slight risk for severe weather between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m.

More rain is expected Thursday morning before a dry stretch in the afternoon, while showers and storms could then return late Thursday night through the day on Friday and into the weekend.

Even with storms possible, high temperatures are forecasted to stay in the upper 80s through the weekend before cooling to around 78 degrees on Sunday.
