Storm Forecast Prompts Arlington Heights to Call Off Memorial Day Parade

The Arlington Heights event is one of the Chicago area's biggest Memorial Day parades

Arlington Heights has canceled one of the Chicago area's biggest Memorial Day parades because of forecasts showing a strong possibility of thunderstorms for Illinois on Monday.

Veterans Memorial Committee Chairman Greg Padovani says there are not enough places to quickly shelter the 3,500 people scheduled to take part if a bad storm hits.

The parade had been scheduled for 9 a.m.

The Arlington Heights Memorial Day ceremony will still take place at 11 a.m., but it will be moved indoors to the gymnasium at Christian Liberty Academy instead of being held at Memorial Park.

Padovani told the (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald that it "broke his heart" to cancel the parade but that safety was important.
