Man Steals Ambulance, Crashes Near Chicago Hospital: Police

A man stole an ambulance at a hospital before crashing the vehicle nearby, according to Chicago police.

The 34-year-old man was waiting to be treated for an undisclosed injury at St. Bernard Hospital in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood at around 3:55 a.m. when he refused treatment and walked off.

The man then jumped into a Chicago Fire Department ambulance and fled, according to police. A witness saw the ambulance barreling away from the hospital grounds and called police, officials said.

The man crashed the ambulance into a light pole in the 200 block of West 64th Street, before officers pulled him over in the 6300 block of South Yale Avenue.

Officials said the man didn't appear too injured from the crash, but was taken back to St. Bernard for evaluation under police guard.

After receiving medical treatment, the man was expected to be taken to a police station, with charges pending in connection with the incident.

Police did not give a motive for the theft. Further details were not immediately available and an investigation remains ongoing.
