Every Chicagoan or frequent visitor to the city knows the familiar feeling you get passing the middle-of-the-road McDonald’s on Chicago’s Skyway – but sadly that feeling will be no more.
The fast-food giant has boarded up and closed their Skyway location, so gone will be the golden arches giving you the ease of knowing you are close to home. And more importantly, your last-ditch chance to make a road trip bathroom break.
While the building at 8871 S. Kingston Ave. remains, it's a mere ghost of the former restaurant. The doors and windows are boarded, the drive-through panes have been hauled away. On a small portion of glass that remains visible, a lonely sign reads, “Sorry for the inconvenience – closed.”
A request to McDonald’s for comment on the reason behind the decision to shut down the Chicago travel staple was not returned. The city roadway has not released details on if another business will replace it.
Many commuters took to social media to mourn the abrupt closure:
There's no McDonalds in the skyway. Coworker and I have been trying to figure out what we did to deserve this. #McNuggetTragedy — Ellie Perleberg (@ElliePerlMusic) February 27, 2015

It looks like another icon of Chicago has bit the dust... The McDonalds in the middle of the Skyway looks like it's closed. — Josh Blain (@BlainPlanes) June 29, 2015
So with that we say, goodbye Skyway McDonald's. Thank you for your years of service.
