Six Flags Great America has upgraded its security for the upcoming season, according to a park spokesman.
John Krajnak, the park’s director of marketing, said at a Gurnee Village Board meeting on March 19 that in addition to new events and attractions, Six Flags is adding new barricades at the park’s front gate, as well as additional cameras throughout the park and on the ride platforms.
Six Flags is “investing in the safety and security of the park and the property in general,” Krajnak said as part of a presentation from the Visit Lake County tourist and promotional bureau.
“It’s an older infrastructure so it’s always important to keep up with the safety of it and security is always our top priority for sure,” he added.
The security upgrades came months after authorities said a family was attacked by a group of roughly 20 young people at the park in September.
The family filed a lawsuit against the park in November, alleging that Six Flags Great America staff failed to intervene when the group attacked, causing them to suffer “extreme” and “debilitating” injuries.
At the time, a spokeswoman for the park called the attack "an isolated incident."

Krajnak did not specifically say the security improvements were connected to the attack, and representatives for Six Flags Great America did not respond to multiple requests for additional comment on the park’s upgrades.
Six Flags Great America opens for the season on April 21.
