Severe Storms Cause Damage, Power Outages

Residents in northern Illinois have been hit hard by storms on Friday night, and NBC 5’s Natalie Martinez has all the latest information on the worst of the damage.

Severe weather rolled through the Chicago area on Friday night, bringing damaging hail, strong winds, and torrential rains to a wide swath of northern Illinois.

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued for numerous counties, including Kankakee, Kendall, La Salle, and Cook counties, and storm damage was prevalent throughout the area.

Nearly 30,000 customers lost power during the storms, according to ComEd, and nearly 200 flights were cancelled at O’Hare as a result of the severe weather.

Storm damage hit numerous areas, including Schaumburg, which experienced hail and wind damage, Streamwood, where a warehouse had its roof peeled back, and Elk Grove Village, which also had a warehouse with a roof torn off.

On the evening of July 21st, a storm was to the east of Elmhurst, but the sun was shining to the west of Elmhurst and there was a fine mist in the sky and a rainbow was created and was visible over Elmhurst for about 5 minutes.

There was also wind damage in Itasca, where trees were knocked over. There was localized flooding in the area.

As a result of the storms, McHenry County is under a Flash Flood Warning until 2:30 a.m., and several counties, including Cook, Kane, and Lake counties, are under a Flood Warning through at least the end of the weekend.

In addition to the threat of more storms, which could roll through northern Illinois on Saturday morning, there will also be the threat of warm temperatures and high humidity as well.

The high temperature in Chicago is forecasted to hit 90 degrees, with a 60 percent chance of rain as showers and thunderstorms could develop during the day.
