3 People Struck, 1 Dragged by Carjacked Mercedes in Gold Coast: Cops

At least three people were struck by a carjacked Mercedes in the Gold Coast Tuesday and charges were pending against at least one person, authorities confirmed.

The carjacking of a 2015 Mercedes occurred about 7:15 p.m. in the 1000 block of North Rush Street, police said. The Chicago Fire Department confirmed it had taken a person who was struck by a vehicle in that area to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

A 30-year-old man left his Mercedes unattended with the doors unlocked and keys near the vehicle, police said.

Someone jumped in the car and took off. The car's owner tried to stop the alleged thief from taking the car and was briefly dragged, police said. He suffered bruising and his condition had stabilized at the hospital.

The stolen Mercedes sped down the street and struck multiple parked cars, police said. An adult pedestrian and an adult cyclist were also struck. The pedestrian's condition stabilized at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The cyclist was treated and released at the scene.

Several cars in the area appeared to be damaged and police could be seen taking a person into custody near Jackson Street and Lake Shore Drive.
