The son of a Northwest Indiana police commander who survived a seven month tour in the Persian Gulf with the U.S. Navy has died after being hit by a car in Florida.
Lt. Robert Huish, 26, had been in a medically-induced coma since the Nov. 28 accident. He was riding a bicycle on the way back to an Atlantic Beach home with a group of friends when the driver of a vehicle sped through an intersection, smashed into him and drove away, the Florida Times-Union reported last week.
A Merrillville town official said Huish died Friday in a Jacksonville, Fla., hospital. No one has been charged, but police said they're searching for the vehicle, which they believe to be a small, white SUV.
Merrillville police Cmdr. Lance Huish said his son's stint in the military was a life-long dream.
"He loved it and he lived for it," Huish told the Gary Post-Tribune over the weekend. "He always wanted to be a naval aviator, and he did it."
Lt. Huish was stationed at Mayport Naval Station in the HSL-44 Swamp Foxes squadron.
"You go through a whole deployment, come back here and get in a hit-and-run," said Lt. Russell Coble, Huish's squad mate. "It’s just frustrating."
Funeral arrangements are pending, but services are being handled by Burns Funeral Home, in Crown Point, Ind.
