Southwest suburban police are warning residents of stolen car parts in the area.
Police are searching for people who have stolen catalytic converters off residents’ cars by crawling under vehicles and using electric saws, according to a statement from Palos Park police.
On Thursday evening, two people parked at Palos Park Metra Station at 123rd Street and 82nd Avenue reported missing catalytic converters.
According to police, the parts are targeted because they contain precious metals and can be sold for $40 to $200 in scrap yards. Thieves target vehicles that are high off the ground and easy to crawl under, police said.
Police encourage residents to park close to the entrance of a building, engrave the license plate number on their converters to make them traceable or have the converter secured to the vehicle’s frame with hardened steel at a muffler shop.
