Off-Duty Officer Shoots Armed Robber in Chicago

An alleged armed robber was shot by an off-duty Cook County Sheriff's officer in Chicago late Sunday night, officials said. 

The shooting happpened around 10:30 p.m. in the 3400 block of West Madison Street, according to authorities. A Cook County Sheriff's spokeswoman says the officer exchanged gunfire with a gunman and the officer shot the suspect in the leg. 

Chicago police say the armed man drove himself to John H. Stroger Jr., Hospital of Cook County with a gunshot wound to the lower right leg. He was then taken into custody. 

The Cook County Sheriff's correctional officer was taken to an area hospital as a precaution, officials said. 

Chicago police are investigating the shooting. No charges had been filed as of early Monday morning.
