A man was shot and killed while stopped at a red light near the University of Chicago's campus early Thursday, according to police.

Authorities said the shooting took place at around 12:05 a.m. in the 1200 block of Midway Plaisance near the school's Hyde Park campus.

A 25-year-old man was driving westbound on Midway Plaisance, stopped at a red light in the right lane at South Woodlawn Avenue, when another vehicle pulled up and someone inside opened fire, according to Chicago police.

The man was shot four times: in the head, left shoulder, lower right arm and right thigh, officials said. He then drove westbound on Midway Plaisance before crashing into a tree, according to police.

Authorities said he was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Family members identified him as Armani Harris, who lived in the first block of East 50th Street in the nearby Bronzeville neighborhood.

Harris' mother Candace Anderson and grandfather Archer Williams said he had a 5-month-old son, had just started a new railroad job and was driving a new car when he was shot.

A security alert notifying University of Chicago students and staff of the shooting was emailed campuswide at around 1:30 a.m., a spokesman for the school said.

That alert said the man killed was not affiliated with the university.

No one is in custody in connection with the shooting, according to police, who continue to investigate.
