Man Accused of Fatally Shooting 7-Year-Old Extradited to Chicago

A man charged with fatally shooting 7-year-old Amari Brown over the Fourth of July holiday weekend has been extradited to Chicago, according to police.

Rasheed Martin, 20, of the 900 block of North Monticello Avenue, was arrested last week at a residence in the Bartley Manor Complex in Douglas County and has been charged with first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder.

Police allege Martin was responsible for the shooting that killed Amari as he watched fireworks with his father, Antonio Brown. Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said Brown was the intended target, but his attorney denies that claim.

Amari's family said the little boy was a "jokester" and acted like a typical 7-year-old boy who loved to run and play. They said the best way to describe him is "a sweet, sweet little boy."

Martin was being held in the Douglas County Jail pending extradition to Illinois. He is expected to appear in bond court in Chicago Wednesday.
