Lyric Opera of Chicago President and CEO Kenneth Pigott has died.

The Lyric's general director, Anthony Freud, announced the news in a written statement, calling it an "unimaginable loss."

Pigott had served on the Lyric's board of directors since 1998 and became president and CEO in 2011. He was instrumental in bringing opera star Renee Fleming to the Lyric to become the company's creative consultant.

He also chaired the international search that brought Freud on board.
