The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Thursday a recall of pourable gel fuels because of burn and flash fire hazards.
The voluntary recall, made in cooperation with nine manufacturers and distributors, involves an estimated two million units in several brands.
The move is a win for Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, who last month called the products"over-the-counter napalm" and blamed them for the deaths and injuries of several people.
At the time, the CPSC said there had been 37 reports of incidents nationwide, 23 of them resulting in burn injuries. Four of the cases were from Illinois.
Those numbers have risen in the last month. The agency said there have now been 65 reports of incidents nationwide, 34 of them resulting in burn injuries.
The problem here: consumers can't tell whether a flame is extinguished before pouring more gel into the pot.
"I urge consumers to stop using the gel fuel as there is a serious and even deadly risk of flash fires and burns when they are added to an already burning pot," Consumer Product Safety Commission chair Inez Tenenbaum said Thursday.
