Flash Flood Warning in Effect as Rain Hammers Suburbs

Up to three inches of rain could fall in some locations

Heavy rains moving through the Chicago area have prompted Flash Flood Warnings in several counties on Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service, northern Kendall County, northeastern LaSalle County, southeastern DeKalb County, and southeaster Kane County are under the warning, which will expire at 1:45 p.m.

Thunderstorms are producing heavy rain over the affected areas, with some dumping as much as two inches of rain per hour. Isolated rainfall amounts of over three inches are possible in some locations.

Another warning has also been issued for portions of Will, Grundy, and Kankakee counties. That warning will last through 3:45 p.m., as heavy rain and downpours are expected.

In Kankakee County, one location reported two inches of rain in a 45-minute span, and thunderstorms remain over the area.

In northwest Indiana, the weather has spawned a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, which inlcudes part of Lake, Porter, Newton, and Jasper counties until 3:15 p.m.

The storms are moving east at 35 mph, and wind gusts of up to 60 mph are possible with the system. Heavy rains are also likely in affected areas.

Residents are advised to be aware of water levels in nearby creeks and streams, and to watch for flooded roadways in the affected areas.

According to a trained weather spotter in Somonauk in DeKalb County, 2.1 inches of rain have fallen in a two-hour time span.
