Cubs Make History in Weekend Wins Over Mets

The Chicago Cubs didn’t make it easy on themselves, but they did do some truly remarkable things this weekend in a four game sweep of the New York Mets.

The Cubs, who are now a season-high 10 games over .500 following their 2-0 win over the Mets on Sunday, not only swept the Mets in the series, but went 6-1 on their seven game road trip and helped trim into Milwaukee’s division lead in the National League Central.

According to Baseball Reference’s Play Index, the four game sweep of the Mets is the Cubs’ first in the Big Apple since the 1991 season. It marks only the fourth time in team history that the Cubs have swept a four-game series in New York against the Mets, and it couldn’t have come at a better time for the Cubs as they look to turn their fortunes around.

Saturday night’s marathon victory over the Mets also broke some historical ground for the Cubs, but not in a good way. According to the good folks at ESPN Stats and Info, the Cubs became just the third team in MLB history to strike out 20 or more times in a game on two different occasions in the same season.

The feat hadn’t been accomplished since 2004, when the Brewers managed to pull off the strikeout fest twice.

ESPN also says that the 24 strikeouts for the Cubs are the second-most in a win since the mound distance was set at 60 feet, 6 inches from home plate all the way back in 1893. The 2004 Brewers somehow managed to win a game against the Anaheim Angels despite striking out 26 times in 17 innings.
