Off-Duty Cook County Sheriff's Deputy Killed in Head-on Crash

A Cook County sheriff's deputy was killed in a head-on crash on Chicago's South Side while he was on his way to work Monday night.

The crash took place at around 8:56 p.m. in the 10300 block of South Kedzie Avenue in the city's Mount Greenwood neighborhood, according to Chicago police.

Nick Theofanopolous, 39, was driving northbound on South Kedzie Avenue when hit a Jeep that had pulled out of a driveway and was turning southbound, officials said.

Authorities said Theofanopolous was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The Cook County medical examiner's office did not immediately release any information about the fatality.

He had been on his way to relieve another deputy who was guarding a detainee at Christ Medical Center when the accident occurred, Cook County sheriff’s office spokeswoman Cara Smith said. He had been with the sheriff's office for 15 years, she added.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this most difficult time," Smith said in a statement.

The 21-year-old woman driving the Jeep was also taken to Christ Medical Center where her condition was stabilized, according to police.

Further details were not immediately available, and the investigation into the crash remained ongoing.
