ComEd Prepares for Possible Outages During Ice Storm Warning

ComEd urged residents to never approach a downed power line and "always assume a power line is energized and extremely dangerous."

ComEd opened its emergency operations center and increased crews in response to an Ice Storm Warning, the utility announced.

"ComEd has developed a plan and is prepared to have the necessary resources available to respond in the event that there are weather-related issues,” said Terence R. Donnelly, ComEd president and chief operating officer, in a statement. "Should there be any impact to our system, our employees will work around the clock to get customers restored quickly and safely."

During a significant icing weather event, any outdoor surface that isn't treated, such as roads, parking lots and sidewalks, will be covered in ice. Even trees could become covered in ice, bringing a risk of limbs breaking under the weight of ice.

ComEd reminded customers Tuesday to take precautions in the event power goes out or power lines go down.

"If a downed power line is spotted, immediately call ComEd at 1-800-EDISON1 (1-800-334-7661). Spanish-speaking customers should call 1-800-95-LUCES (1-800-955-8237)," ComEd said.

ComEd urged residents to never approach a downed power line and "always assume a power line is energized and extremely dangerous."

The utility asked that residents don't approach ComEd crews about restoration times as the area around them could be hazardous.
