You may not be able to climb mountains in Chicago, but the next best thing is opening this weekend just in time for the warm up in the forecast.
Chicago’s first and only Climbing Park, located in Maggie Daley Park, is set to re-open for the season this Saturday. The walls will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The rock climbing walls stand at the center of the Skating Ribbon 40 feet tall, covering 19,000 square feet. The two structures provide walls sectioned by skill level from beginner to advance and can hold 25 to 100 climbers at a time.
Climbing is first-come, first-serve and first-time climbers require certification. Top rope climbing costs $19 and includes a 45-60 minute certification course, unlimited clime time, and equipment (helmet, harness and shoes). Bouldering, climbing without a harness, cost $10 for a 15 minute certification course, unlimited climb time and equipment.
Climbers returning from last year will also have to complete a certification course or pass a belay check. Certification is good for the duration of the season.
The 20-acre Maggie Daley Park, named after Chicago's former first lady, is located in north Grant Park near Columbus Drive, Randolph Street, Monroe Street and Lake Shore Drive. When the construction project is complete, the park will have a play garden in addition to the skating ribbon and climbing walls.
