6 Dead, 37 Wounded in Weekend Shootings Across Chicago

The latest fatal shooting happened Sunday night, when five people were shot while sitting on a porch in the city's West Englewood neighborhood

Six people were killed and 37 others wounded in violence across the city this weekend.

The latest fatal shooting was Sunday night, when five people were shot while sitting on a porch in the city's West Englewood neighborhood.

A group of about 50 people were outside for a gathering at a home in the 2000 block of West 68th Place, taking advantage of one of the first warm nights of the season, when police say just after 11 p.m. someone dressed in black with a gun jumped out of a car and opened fire. Two men, ages 26 and 38, were killed. 

The first fatal shooting occurred Saturday morning at 1:14 a.m., when a 22-year-old man later identified by the Cook County medical examiner as Gino Carrasco was shot while leaving a store in the 3200 block of W 16th St in Lawndale. He self-transported to St Anthony Hospital and was transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The second fatal shooting occurred at around 9 p.m. Saturday night in the city's Roseland neighborhood. One woman was killed and two men injured when they were getting out of a car in the 11400 block of S Stewart. They heard shots, realized they had been hit, and drove to Roseland Community Hospital. The 23-year-old woman was pronounced dead with a gunshot wound to the head, according to police. She was later identified as Tiara Parks, the daughter of a Cook County Sheriff’s deputy. A 24-year-old man was shot in the lower back and a 17-year-old boy in the left leg. Both were listed in stable condition.

Friday

  • At 1:05 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was wounded in an accidental, self-inflicted shooting in the 6900 block of S Paxton Ave in the city’s South Shore neighborhood. He self-transported to Jackson Park Hospital and was listed in good condition. He originally told officers he was walking outside and shot by an unknown offender, but then later admitted that he had accidentally discharged the gun inside his apartment.
  • A 26-year-old man was shot in the 1200 block of S Kedzie in the North Lawndale neighborhood at 1:58 p.m. He arrived at Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest and left leg and was listed in good condition.
  • Friday evening, a 41-year-old man walked into St. Bernard Hospital with a gunshot wound to the right leg, according to police. He told officers he was shot at around 6:30 p.m. in the 7800 block of S Lafayette Ave in the West Chatham neighborhood, according to police.
  • A 20-year-old man shot himself in the hand at about 11 p.m. in the 3100 block of W Douglas Blvd in the city’s Lawndale neighborhood. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, according to police.

Saturday

  • Around 12:55 a.m., a 20-year-old man was walking in 800 block of E 82nd St in the East Chatham neighborhood when an unknown male offender got out of a car and opened fire. The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the left armpit.
  • A 22-year-old man was fatally shot while leaving a store in the 3200 block of W 16th St in Lawndale, police said. A vehicle pulled up at 1:14 a.m. and someone inside opened fire. The victim, later identified by the medical examiner’s office as Gino Carrasco, self-transported to St Anthony Hospital and was transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
  • Just minutes later at 1:17 a.m., a 23-year-old man was standing outside in the 200 block of N Keeler in the West Garfield Park neighborhood when someone approached and opened fire. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition with a gunshot wound to the leg, according to police.
  • A 29-year-old man was critically injured in a shooting outside a West Town neighborhood bar at 1:54 a.m. Police say he got into a fight with someone who then shot him in the neck in the 1700 block of W Grand Ave. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.
  • A 17-year-old boy was standing outside in the 1800 block of S Springfield in the Lawndale neighborhood when an offender approached and fired shots. He attempted to flee but was struck in the lower left ankle. He was taken to St Anthony Hospital in good condition.
  • At 2:59 p.m., a 22-year-old man and 16-year-old girl were sitting on a porch in the 0-100 block of E 102nd St when someone got out of a gray vehicle, approached them and began firing shots, police said. The girl sustained gunshot wounds to the upper arm and chest and was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. The man was taken in stable with a gunshot wound to the stomach.
  • At 3:16 p.m., a 22-year-old man was shot in the 1300 block of W 84th St in the Gresham neighborhood. He was taken in good condition to Little Company of Mary Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg.
  • Two men were sitting in the in a car at 4:54 p.m. in the 800 block of N Avers in the Humboldt Park neighborhood when a light-colored car pulled up and someone fired shots from inside the car. A 22-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to the left leg and was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition. A 29-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the left hand and refused medical treatment on the scene, according to police.
  • A 16-year-old boy was standing outside in the 6400 block of S. Green in the Englewood neighborhood around 6:30 p.m. when he heard shots and felt pain. He was shot in the buttocks and taken to St. Bernard Hospital in good condition, police said.
  • A 17-year-old boy was shot in the 8800 block of S Exchange in the South Chicago neighborhood at 7:03 p.m. He was riding his bicycle when he heard shots and felt pain, police said. He was shot in the hip and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in stable condition.
  • At 9:54 p.m., a 21-year-old man was standing in the 5100 block of W Madison in the Austin neighborhood when someone fired shots from a passing red SUV. He was hit in the buttocks and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where his condition was stabilized, according to police.
  • A 24-year-old man was standing in an alley in the 4600 block of S Richmond in the Brighton Park neighborhood at 11:07 p.m. when an unknown offender fired shots, striking him in the left leg, according to police. He was taken in good condition to Saint Anthony Hospital.
  • A 22-year-old man was standing outside in the 8300 block of S Wood in the Gresham neighborhood at 11:41 p.m. when an unknown black man emerged from an alley and opened fire, police said. He sustained a gunshot wound to the right leg and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in stable condition.
  • At 11:56 p.m., a 33-year-old man was standing outside in the 600 block of N Christiana in the East Garfield Park neighborhood when an unknown offender walked up and fired shots, police said. He self-transported to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

Sunday

  • Around 12:25 a.m., police responded to two calls of shots fired in the 3200 block of W Douglas Blvd in the Lawndale neighborhood. Upon arrival, they found a 24-year-old man unresponsive in a parked vehicle, according to police. He had a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead on the scene. He was later identified as Darrell Wilson of the 100 block of S Central Ave, according to the Cook County medical examiner.
  • A 30-year-old man was standing outside in the 3200 block of W Maypole in the East Garfield Park neighborhood at 1:07 a.m. when another man got out of a nearby vehicle and opened fire, according to police. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with a “through-and-through” gunshot wound to the leg, where he was treated and released.
  • At 1:49 a.m., a 36-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk in the 8700 block of S. Honore in the Gresham neighborhood when a yellow sedan pulled up and someone inside fired shots. The man was hit several times and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition.
  • A 22-year-old man was shot in the 400 0block of W Bryn Mawr in the Brynford Park neighborhood at 3:12 a.m., according to police. He self-transported to Swedish Covenant Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
  • A 28-year-old man was driving in the 1300 block of S Christiana in the West Side Lawndale neighborhood when a group of male teens approached on foot. One fired shots into the car, striking the man in the leg. He drove himself to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was in stable condition.
  • Just before 5 p.m., a 39-year-old woman was in a verbal altercation with an unknown male at Humboldt Park, when he left and returned with a gun, firing shots into a group of people and striking the woman before fleeing. She was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the left leg. 
  • At 5:15 p.m., an 18-year-old man was walking south in the 8700 block of S Racine Ave in the Gresham neighborhood when he heard multiple gunshots and felt pain, police said. He was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in good condition.
  • Officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 3600 block of W Schubert Ave in the Logan Square neighborhood at 6:23 p.m. When they arrived, they found a 25-year-old man unresponsive on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The city reached the grim milestone of 1,000 shootings just Wednesday of last week, six to nine weeks earlier than the previous four years, according to a report from the Chicago Tribune. 

Chicago has now seen more shootings in 2016 than New York City and Los Angeles combined, according to the Tribune.
