Mayor Daley isn’t happy about the scandal growing around several mayoral candidates’ petitions.
There are allegations that the nominating petitions for four candidates for mayor were fraudulently notarized.
The secretary of state’s office is already looking into whether two people falsely represented themselves as legitimate notaries, and signed off on the candidates’ petitions. Records show they notarized the petitions of State Sen. James Meeks, Carol Moseley Braun and community activist Patricia Van Pelt Watkins.
Daley said he has no doubt federal investigators would have come after him if he was similarly accused.
"If I did that, the feds would be right after me tomorrow. They’d be chasing me down the street!" he said. "It’s a crime. Get the feds and state (investigators). Get 'em on it."
Impersonating a notary is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine. Impersonators can be charged on each falsified signature.
