Cardinal Francis George was released from Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood and returned to his residence Saturday.
The 78-year-old cardinal was admitted to the hospital Sunday, the Archdiocese of Chicago confirmed Tuesday morning. As of 3:30 p.m. Saturday, the cardinal was home and resting, his spokesperson said.
The cardinal in December stopped taking part in a clinical trial of a new drug that aimed to improve his immune system in his ongoing battle against cancer.
Doctors describe the cancer in George’s liver and a kidney discovered in August 2012 as “very painful.”
George stepped down as the leader of Chicago’s more than 2 million Roman Catholics in November. Blase Cupich became Chicago’s archbishop.
