A single mother was killed on her way to work early Tuesday morning in Berwyn after another vehicle crossed the center line and hit her head-on, police said.

Authorities said the accident happened just before 3 a.m. as 25-year-old Mayra Rivera drove near Ridgeland and Ogden.

Witnesses told police a man driving a white Nissan crossed the center line and fatally hit the black Pontiac beind driven by Rivera, who was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

According to Chief Michael Cimaglia, Rivera, who has a 6-year-old son, was on her way to work at the time of the crash. It was not immediately known where she worked.

The driver of the Nissan and a female passenger in the vehicle were both taken to area hospitals. Authorities were not immediately able to talk to the passenger due to her injuries, police said.

It was not immediately clear if felony charges would be filed in the crash, but police say traffic citations will be issued.
