Gunfire Injures Nine In Austin Neighborhood

Sunday night sounds of gunfire ring out over four-hour period

Nine people -- including a 9-year-old-girl and a 14-year-old boy -- were shot within four hours Sunday night in the West Side’s Austin community.

Although the incidents were separate, gunfire first broke out at 7:30. Five men, ranging in age from 17 to 29, were found wounded in that drive-by shooting.

About 50 minutes later, another shooting about a mile away left a 9-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy wounded. Both were listed in serious condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.

About an hour later, at 9:20 p.m., a 14-year-old boy was shot in the leg in the 5400 block of West Kinzie Street. He was playing basketball when he heard gunshots. He didn't realize he had been shot until someone pointed out that he was bleeding.

At 10:52 p.m., a 16-year-old boy was seriously injured when he was shot in the shoulder while walking home from a girlfriend's house in the 5800 block of West Midway Park Avenue.

As of Monday morning, no arrests had been made in any of those shootings.
