Attempted Robbery Reported Behind Darien Strip Mall

The man ran away without either the purse or phone

Police are investigating an attempted robbery Thursday behind a strip mall in west suburban Darien, the Pioneer Press is reporting.

A 17-year-old girl was on a walking path between Abbey Court and the back of the strip mall at 2445 75 St. in Darien at 6:20 p.m. when she was approached from behind by a man who demanded her purse and cellphone, according to police.

There was no threat of force or use of a weapon, nor physical contact made, police said. The man ran away without either the purse or phone.

The suspect is described as black man about 20, 5-foot-8 and 150 pounds, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

The girl called police when she arrived home, but a patrol of the area did not find the suspect. Darien police have increased patrols in the area.

Police remind residents to be aware of their surroundings in public and not be distracted by texting or talking on a phone.
