Fair or Foul: Anthony Rizzo Faces Criticism After Slide vs. Pirates

The slide was ruled as clean by replay officials

Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo sparked controversy Monday when he hit Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Elias Diaz with a slide at home plate.

The play occurred during the eighth inning of the game, as the Cubs were trying to add onto their lead. After Chris Gimenez hit a ball sharply to shortstop Sean Rodriguez, Rizzo was thrown out at home. Rizzo’s slide hit the leg of Diaz, forcing an errant throw from the catcher that allowed a pair of runs to score.

After the play, replay officials ruled that the slide did not violate MLB rules, sending Pirates manager Clint Hurdle into an angry tirade that resulted in his ejection from the game.

Several Pittsburgh players, including Rodriguez, criticized Rizzo’s slide after the game, but the first baseman insisted that the play was clean, and that he had checked on Diaz to make sure that he was okay after the collision.

It’s unlikely that Rizzo will see any discipline as a result of the play, but what do you think Cubs fans: was the play clean?
