Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run on Popular North Side Strip

A woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash that stunned a popular strip on Chicago's North Side Thursday evening.

Police said the crash happened just after 9 p.m. on Halsted near Roscoe Street in the city's Lakeview neighborhood.

A 56-year-old woman was crossing westbound on Halsted when she was hit by a red Jeep Renegade, investigators said. The driver did not stop and continued southbound on Halsted, authorities said.

The victim was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

People rushed out of area restaurants and bars as one witness tried to perform CPR on the woman until emergency responders arrived.

"I heard a thud," said witness Keith Van. "Several people ran out of the DS Tequila restaurant and they told me that she was hit by a red Jeep and she hit the windshield, apparently rolled off the hood and then the truck ran over her."

There are a number of surveillance cameras at the bars and businesses in the area. The Chicago Police Major Accidents Unit is investigating the crash.

As of Friday morning, no arrests had been made.
