Win or Lose, Cubs Set to Celebrate Playoff Berth Saturday

The Chicago Cubs weren’t able to celebrate their playoff berth on Friday night when the Oakland Athletics knocked off the San Francisco Giants, but they fully intend on getting the party started on Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs have to play a 12:05 p.m. game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, but regardless of the outcome of the game, the team is planning a blowout party in the clubhouse to celebrate their first playoff appearance in seven seasons.

According to first baseman Anthony Rizzo, things could get a little bit rowdy:

Manager Joe Maddon is encouraging his team to celebrate the achievement of getting back into the postseason, and he offered his thoughts earlier this week on the art of partying:

“Listen, the word ‘party’ has taken on a negative connotation in our country these days. It’s really bumming me out. There’s nothing wrong with having a good party. So if you have an opportunity to have a good party, go out and have one. And it’s okay to have a good time.”

The Cubs currently are sitting four and a half games behind the Pirates for the top National League wild card spot, so a win would make Saturday’s celebration even sweeter for the team.
