Family Mourns Toddler Struck and Killed by Delivery Truck in Roseland

Sparkly pink shoes now sit a few feet from where three year old Makayla Dameron was killed Saturday morning.

“It’s just awful," said Makayla’s grandmother Vedia Taylor in the far South Side Roseland neighborhood, where the accident happened.

Makayla’s family is devastated after the little girl was hit by a delivery truck around 11:30 a.m. while crossing State Street near 102nd Street. Her family said Makayla was with her mother on the way to the store when she broke free from her mother’s hand as the truck drove by.

The driver did stop and Makayla died at the scene, according to police News Affairs Officer Michael Sullivan.

“We just lost somebody who’s really important, really special to us,” said Makayla’s cousin Melissa Taylor.

Her family said the big smile on Makayla’s face was constant and they’ve lost a beacon to their lives.

“She loved life," said relative Earnestine Taylor. "She was always cheerful when she woke up in the morning and cheerful when she went to bed."

“She’s so sweet, loving, fun, bubbly, like to play loved to smile…she’s just a bright little girl," said Melissa Taylor.
